Horse and owner portraits - Cornwall photographer

The beautiful Tess with her horse Sox.
It was pouring with rain for this photoshoot but we embraced the weather and the photos turned out great! I love how I managed to capture the raindrops in a lot of the images.

Portraits - Jenni - Kit Hill Cornwall

A while back I photographed the very talented Jenni Ball, also known as singer Jenni Anne.
I vaguely knew Jenni from going to the same school and from following her on Instagram. Jenni caught my eye, not only because of her beauty in front of the lens but also her love and talent in music, art and photography.

It was a very chilly wintery day so I of course suggested we should go to the most exposed and rural place in our local area, Kit Hill! It may have been a mistake as it was FREEZING, but if you catch Kit Hill on a good clear day it is the perfect place for photography. You can find giant boulders, mining architecture, a water filled quarry, areas of flat green grass and moorland...you can get very creative up there, plus it is great place to walk and there are of course always lots of dogs to stroke!

When on Kit Hill I stuck to my 50mm Lens to get some fab shallow depth of field (blurred background) images. Since buying my 24-105mm lens I have been neglecting my 50mm which is such a shame as it has to be the best lens I or anyone could buy! I must admit I did sneak back on to my 24-105mm for the studio shots.

Once I finally relieved Jenni from the cold (I am sorry Jenni!) we went back to my home where I constructed my pop-studio. It is a simple setup with a light and flashgun, it works great!

Take a look at my favourite snaps from the day...

1st Birthday Party photography | child portraits | Devon, Plymouth

Just over a year ago I photographed Ed and Anabel just a few weeks before the birth of their 1st child. George entered the world last October and now a year on I was invited to his 1st birthday party to photograph his friends and of course get some lovely shots of George and his parents and I also photograph my first cake smash!

Anabel knits beautiful outfits and accessories for newborns and children so it was no surprise that George had one to wear that also blended in well with the fantastic rainbow cake she had also made. Anabel did insist that his outfit was designed to embarrass him when he's 18!

It was a manic 2 hours running around their house with around 10 other 1 year olds and parents but it was great fun!

I am still taking bookings for 2014 so tell your friends and spread the word!

The Woodland Fairy - Editorial work - Illustrated photographs - Cotehele Cornwall

It is so refreshing to do something different and creative!
I collaborated with the wonderfully talented Illustrator Jenny Cooper to create something unique for Pebble Magazine. We came up with the idea to create some Woodland Fairy photographs by incorporating illustration. We photographed in Cotehele, a National Trust woodland in Cornwall with the lovely model Rachel Buxton. It was a perfect place for capturing a magical atmosphere with the mixture of backdrops it had to offer. Having an illustrator draw over my images was something new for me so it was quite hard to think about how to shoot the right compositions and get the correct lighting.

I absolutely love what Jenny has created with my photos, she has done an amazing job and adding illustrations to them is something I have now fallen completely in love with, so Jenny and I hope to do more in the not to distant future when we both have some free time!

Melissa's Fabulous 1940's themed party - Cardinals Hat, Saltash, Cornwall

This summer has been a busy one - hence my minimal blogging! I can't wait to get all my editing done then I can find the time to start sharing some of the wonderful weddings and events I have worked over the last few months! I felt this one needed blogging - Melissa's 40th Birthday party at the Cardinals Hat, Saltash....and what a fabulous party it was!

The parties theme was 1940's, which I personally thought was a difficult one, but I couldn't have been more wrong. Everyone dressed up so well and the decorations that Melissa had made and designed were amazing. Beautiful flowers, bunting, giant 1940's posters on the walls, photographs, and even a dressing table and mirror for the ladies! As a photographer herself, Melissa even set up a backdrop for a Photobooth in the corner of the room.

Melissa had a lot of family and friends that unfortunately couldn't make it to the party as they live in Australia so her husband had organised video messages from them all which were relayed on a TV in front of all the guests. There was then a surprise for me and a massive surprise to Melissa that her Sister and Mother had flown all the way from Australia to see her! The room erupted with cheers and a good few tears! A very special moment and wonderful night.

Before & After - Photoshop Editing - Pebblezine

Airing our the guilt

See the full feature HERE

For the latest issue of Pebble Zine I was privileged to get asked to photograph some shots to be published in the fashion section. My brief was to think of a creative way to display some clothes without using models. The thought of a washing line instantly came to mind.

For this first photo I got two assistants to hold up the clothing on a washing line and then I photoshopped them out. I used the cloned tool for most of this image to get the girls out of the photo, and also the reflection in the water. I decided I didn't like the houses in the background so I found a stock image which had a nice horizon. Using the layer tools, when I erased the top layer it revealed the stock image underneath.

For this image I did another technique to prevent having to use the clone tool over the girls. Instead I used a tripod and took one photo without anything in the composition and then another with the girls holding the clothing. This allowed me to overlay the two images in photoshop. I put the photo of the clothing on the top visible layer and the other photo below. I then used the eraser to rub away the girls leaving the empty picture below. Da darrr the clothes are floating!
